Principal's Message

Dear Laurel Families,

Welcome to another wonderful year at Laurel Elementary Magnet School of Innovation and Career Exploration! My name is Dr. Mike Trimmell and I am honored to serve as your new principal. I look forward to meeting each and every student and family at Laurel. This being my first letter to the community, I would like to take this opportunity to briefly introduce myself. My path into education started a little different than most. I studied Cell and Developmental Biology at California State University, Fullerton (CSUF) with the idea of going into dental school. After graduating from CSUF and while applying to dental school, I decided to do something that I thought was going to be “easy”, and took a position as a substitute teacher at a middle school. Boy was I wrong! Teaching was not easy at all, however, it was extremely rewarding. Due to my degree in Cell Biology, I was asked to long-term sub in an eighth grade Physical Science classroom. I gladly accepted and proceeded to have one of the most challenging and most rewarding experiences of my life. At the end of the semester, I withdrew all of my applications from dental school and I immediately enrolled in a teaching credential program. I’ve never looked back! Since obtaining my Bachelor’s Degree from CSUF, I have earned a Single Subject Teaching Credential and Master’s Degree of Education from National University, an Administrative Services Credential from California State Polytechnic Universtiy, Pomona (Cal Poly), and a Doctorate of Education from California State Univeristy, Long Beach (CSULB).

Along with my primary role as an elementary school principal, I also work as faculty at CSULB where I teach in both the Administrative Services Credential / Master’s program and the Doctorate of Education program. I also teach for Trident University International (TUI) in both the Master’s and Doctorate of Education programs. I am proud that TUI specializes in providing top tier education to active military, veterans, and their families. As you can see, I am passionate about education, and especially about educating others!

Most importantly, I want everyone to know that I extremely fortunate to be married to an amazing woman of 14 years and I have four beautiful children between the ages of 11 and 4. All of my children also attend BOUSD schools! BOUSD is an amazing place to be!

Enough about me...at Laurel, we are excited to continue as Brea’s only magnet school. Our theme this year is “Level Up!” We will continue to bring new innovative lessons and opportunities to all students with an emphasis on technology integration and hands-on and project-based learning opportunities. Laurel students will continue to work with community partners to explore a variety of careers as we deepen the career exploration aspect of our magnet theme. At Laurel Elementary Magnet School we prepare students to be college and career ready. We are proud to call ourselves Laurel Leopards, where all Innovate, Create, and Explore! A special thanks to the teachers, staff and families that continue to work together to create a welcoming community that is focused on student success. We hope you are ready for a great 2018-19 school year together!
