Looking for a way to beat the heat this summer? Students and families of BOUSD are invited to make their way over to Creamistry in Brea to try a unique creation developed by a Laurel Elementary Magnet School kindergartner.
Through a community partnership with Creamistry in Brea, Laurel Elementary Magnet School of Innovation and Career Exploration hosted an Ice Cream Creation Contest just before the end of the school year with the winning flavor thought up by one of Laurel’s very own kindergartners. The contest had a total of three student finalists who all had their flavors tried and tested by several judges in front of the entire school on May 24. Now, the winning creation, thoughtfully named “Larry’s Fav” after Laurel’s mascot, Larry the Leopard, will be available all summer at Creamistry in Brea.
Creamistry Brea is located at 1623 E. Imperial Hwy in the Brea Plaza Shopping Center.
“The challenge given to Laurel students was to create an ice cream that best represented Laurel Leopards,” said teacher Kimberly Thorsen. “Each class chose one ice cream creation to move forward in the decision making process and then a survey was sent out to staff to narrow it down to the top three creations.”
Thorsen said Creamistry was then invited to attend one of Laurel’s last “Feel Good Friday” assemblies where the three finalists’ creations were judged in front of students, teachers and staff, with “Larry’s Fav” taking the winning spot.
“Larry’s Fav” starts with cookie butter ice cream as the base flavor and then is filled with an explosion of mix-ins including brownie bites, marshmallow cream, drizzled fudge and rainbow sprinkles. Yum!
“We had a great experience working with Laurel Elementary,” said Creamistry franchise owner Celeste Hunter. “Kim was great to work with and my team really enjoyed making all three of the finalists’ creations, which were different from our corporate creations.”
After the winning flavor was chosen, Celeste said they decided to make it available as a secret menu item all summer to anyone who asks for it.
Through community partnerships such as the one with Creamistry, Laurel students are exposed to a variety of industries and careers, enhancing and enriching the learning experiences of all Laurel leopards. Creamistry is one of 19 community partners with Laurel Elementary Magnet School. In addition to creating this fun activity, Creamistry has also provided generous support to all six BOUSD elementary schools by providing complimentary gift cards and ice cream coupons for students earning academic achievements throughout the school year.
